Herzlich willkommen beim neuen AUSSDA-Newsletter! Allen, die uns noch nicht kennen, möchten wir uns in dieser ersten Ausgabe vorstellen – und einen Überblick über unsere Services geben sowie einen Blick in die Zukunft werfen.
Wer wir sind…
AUSSDA - The Austrian Social Science Data Archive ist eine zentrale Forschungsinfrastruktur für die Sozialwissenschaften in Österreich.
AUSSDA bietet qualitativ hochwertige, nachhaltige und nutzer*innenfreundliche Lösungen zur digitalen Archivierung von Forschungsdaten. Das Archiv arbeitet nach internationalen Standards, um sozialwissenschaftliche Daten und deren Dokumentation auffindbar, zugänglich und nutzbar zu machen. Um die Daten sicher mit der Community zu teilen, nutzen wir die in Harvard entwickelte Open-Source Software Dataverse.
Von unseren Leistungen profitieren nicht nur Forschende, auch Studierende und - je nach Nutzungslizenz - andere Bildungseinrichtungen, Medienschaffende und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit können unsere Daten und Services nutzen. Wir stehen für Integrität in der Datenarchivierung und -nachnutzung und setzen uns für die Einhaltung ethischer Prinzipien in der Forschung ein.
Außerdem vertreten wir Österreich als nationaler Service Provider im Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA ERIC) – was das genau bedeutet, können Sie hier nachlesen.
Was bisher geschah…
Seit 2017 arbeiten wir an unseren Standorten an den Universitäten Wien, Graz und Linz daran, sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungsdaten zugänglich und nutzbar zu machen – für alle Forschenden in- und außerhalb Österreichs. Wir freuen uns besonders, dass wir zukünftig auch an der Universität Innsbruck vertreten sind. Alle Datensätze, die bei uns veröffentlicht werden, finden sie hier.
Außerdem setzen wir uns für den offenen Zugang zu Forschungsdaten ein. Warum das wichtig ist, erfahren Sie in diesem Video.
Um die internationale Vernetzung von Forschenden zu fördern, sind wir an verschiedensten Open Science Projekten beteiligt, derzeit arbeiten wir im Rahmen der Social Sciences & Humanities Open Cloud (SSHOC) und bei EOSC-Pillar am Aufbau der European Open Science Cloud.
Als Reaktion auf die COVID-19-Pandemie haben wir im Frühling 2020 mit dem COVID-19 Data Fast Track Publishing Projekt eine zentrale Plattform für relevante sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungsdaten aus Österreich geschaffen.
Im Juli 2020 haben wir eine besondere Auszeichnung für die Qualität unserer Arbeit erhalten: AUSSDA wurde als eines der ersten Archive in Österreich mit dem Core Trust Seal als „trustworthy data repository“ zertifiziert. Alle Infos dazu finden Sie hier.
Was als nächstes kommt…
Unsere laufenden Projekte werden in den kommenden Monaten interessante Ergebnisse bringen, in SSHOC etwa einen Open Knowledge Graph zu Wahlforschung. In CESSDA ERIC werden wir an Trainings und an neuen Entwicklungen rund um die Software Dataverse arbeiten und andere Archive zum Core Trust Seal beraten.
Besonders für Forschende, die regelmäßig Daten bei uns archivieren, ist der neue Self Deposit Service interessant, der mit Ende 2020 das Licht der Welt erblickt hat. Außerdem entwickeln wir neue Services zum Thema Forschungsdatenmanagament und arbeiten weiter an der EOSC.
Auch in den nächsten Wochen werden wir neue sozialwissenschaftliche COVID-19 Datensätze publizieren, etwa vom Austrian Corona Panel. Weitere Datensätze in Aufbereitung kommen von der Austrian National Election Study (AUTNES) und dem Team des Demokratieradars, und auch neue Metadaten von Umfragen des Meinungsforschungsinstituts GfK ab den 1950er Jahren werden bereitgestellt.

Welcome to the new AUSSDA Newsletter! To all those who do not know us yet, we would like to introduce ourselves in this first issue - and give an overview of our services as well as a peek into the future.
Who we are...
AUSSDA - The Austrian Social Science Data Archive is a central research infrastructure for the social sciences in Austria.
AUSSDA offers high-quality and user-friendly solutions for the digital archiving of research data. The archive works according to international standards to make social science data and their documentation findable, accessible and usable. To share the data securely with the community, we use the open-source software Dataverse, developed at Harvard.
Not only researchers benefit from AUSSDA: Our data and services can also be used by students and - depending on the usage licence - by other educational institutions, media professionals and the interested public. We stand for integrity in data archiving and data re-use and are committed to upholding ethical principles in research.
In addition, we represent Austria as the national service provider in the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA ERIC) - you can read more about CESSDA here.
What has happened so far...
Since 2017, we have been working at our locations at the Universities of Vienna, Graz and Linz to make social science research data accessible and usable, for all researchers in- and outside of Austria. We are particularly pleased that we will also be represented at the University of Innsbruck soon. All datasets published by AUSSDA can be found here.
We are also committed to Open Science and open access to research data. In this video, you can find out why this is important.
In order to promote the international networking of researchers, we are involved in a wide range of Open Science projects. Currently, we are working on the development of the European Open Science Cloud within the frameworks of the Social Sciences & Humanities Open Cloud (SSHOC) and EOSC-Pillar.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in spring 2020, we created a central platform for relevant social science research data from Austria: the COVID-19 Data Fast Track Publishing Project.
In July 2020, we received a special award for the quality of our work: AUSSDA was one of the first archives in Austria to be certified with the Core Trust Seal as a "trustworthy data repository". You can find all the information here.
What's next...
Our ongoing projects will lead to interesting outcomes in the coming months: in SSHOC, for example, an Open Knowledge Graph on election research. In CESSDA ERIC we will work on trainings, new developments around the software Dataverse and the tool pyDataverse and we will advise other archives on how to obtain the Core Trust Seal.
Of particular interest to researchers who regularly archive data with us is the new Self Deposit Service, which we established at the end of 2020. We are also developing new services in the area of research data management and continue to work on the EOSC.
Also, we will publish new COVID-19 social science datasets in the coming weeks, for example from the Austrian Corona Panel. Other datasets that will be part of our collections come from the Austrian National Election Survey (AUTNES), from the second wave of the Democracy Radar, and new metadata from surveys conducted by the opinion research institute GfK from the 1950s onwards.
How you can benefit from AUSSDA...
If you need data, you will find a large selection of current and historical data sets, for example the Social Survey Austria (SSÖ), the Microcensus of Statistics Austria, the Corona Panel Project or the Austrian National Election Study (AUTNES).

If you want to archive your research data, AUSSDA offers you a secure and free way to do so. Archiving your data with AUSSDA
- improves your chances of visibility, academic recognition and incrased citations,
- enables you to comply with the FAIR principles and have your data become part of the European Open Science Cloud,
- allows users to access your research data with clear licences.
