Effective Visual Communication of Science
soft skill training Effective Visual Communication of Science by Dr. Jernej Zupanc is offered as blended learning that combines a self-study module and an online workshop.
Dr. Jernej Zupanc holds a PhD in computer science, with a great expertise in consulting companies on European funding. As a founder of Seyens Lt. he is helping scientists on all levels effectively communicate their research ideas. In this workshop you will learn to visually communicate your research ideas and results so your comples messages are effortessly understood by any specific audience (scientists or non-scientists). This course series will help you with your data visualisation and creation of effective scientific images, slides in the shortest possible time that you can use for posters, papers and grants.
Goals and Course of the Workshop
When:
1) April 5th 2024: important information on workshop structure and workflow –coached by the instructor Dr. Jernej Zupanc: within the first part of the training you can choose between remote online courses (adapted to your time schedule) or a live zoom webinar which will be scheduled within 1 month before the live workshop on 6.05.24.
2) live online webinar on 6.05.24 at 9am until 1:30 pm

Target Audience: from PhD students to gorup leaders.1 ECTS will be given for participation (soft skills).

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training at DoSChem
soft skill training Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) by Marcel van der Heyden is offered for all newly started PhD student cohorts of our school on a regular basis and in a meaningful way.
When: 3 follow up parts (in 3 years)
• Year 1: 3 hr on site meeting (in Vienna): 1st hour lecture on RCR (interactive and updated with recent issues), 2nd hour students discuss a case in small groups according to a structured reflection model, 3rd hour students present the outcomes of their structure discussion to the others of the group. The teacher adds discussion parts.
Date: 24th of May 2024 9.00-13.00 (with breaks)
Room: Hörsaal 2H510 UZA II Rotunde, Josef-Holaubek-Platz 2.
• Year 2: (online), students perform an e-module “Integrity in academic publication: authorship and peer review”, which will take approximately 3-4 hours. Subsequently, a live meeting of 1 hr will be held in which the prepared assignments will be discussed with the students and teacher
• Year 3 (online) similar as year two, but on the e-module “Responsible Research through supervision, mentoring and working together”.
Before the first course date: homework: 1-2 paper need to be prepared in advance.

Effective Scientific Writing: Process and Product Soft Skill Workshop
soft skill training Effective Scientific Writing: Process and Product held by Dr. Katherine Tiede.
Dr. Katherine Tiede has spent more than three decades working with scientists on how to communicate their research. She draws on her background in linguistics to provide scientists with tools to be able to see their writing as a reader does as well as tools to draft, write, and revise more effectively. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto and after a decade as faculty, began in 2008 to give annual seminars at various Austrian universities.
Goals and course of the workshop
When: 26.08/27.08 and 2.09/3.09.2024 – 4 afternoon sessions (plus some homework prior and inbetween the sessions)

Aimed at: doctoral students, postdocs, young researchers
The Institut français d'Autriche and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs offer excellence scholarships for short scientific research stays (1 to 6 months) and doctoral studies (cotutelle and codirection) in France. These scholarships are aimed at doctoral students, postdocs and ambitious young researchers who have written their doctoral thesis within the last 5 years and are employed in an Austrian and/or French research institution (university, research institute or similar).
- Funding: between 1.100 and 1.700€ per month

- Marietta Blau-Grant from the OeAD: offers financial support for six- to twelve-month study periods abroad for doctoral or PhD students of Austrian universities. It serves to optimise their dissertations. Junior researchers are the main target group.
