About
The International Ethnic and Immigrant Minorities’ Survey Data Network addresses existing research and knowledge gaps by bringing together researchers from all sectors to improve access, usability and dissemination of survey data on the economic, social and political integration of ethnic and migrant minorities (EMMs). This Action will achieve these goals by coordinating existing and future research efforts by scholars and research-oriented organizations that produce and analyze data on EMMs’ integration.
An increasing amount of survey data have been produced through EU funding, with many projects focusing on EMMs.
These surveys cover a wide range of territories (cities, regions, countries as a whole) across multiple European countries, and an increasing number of them are general purpose surveys (such as labour market surveys or electoral surveys) that include boost samples, separate surveys or large samples of EMMs. There is also a large (but still to be fully documented) number of surveys to EMMs undertaken by various research institutes, civil society organizations, think tanks and individual scholars (e.g. PhD students).
Unfortunately, the results of these time-consuming and resource-intensive research efforts are often scattered across universities, archives or in the personal files of individual researchers. There is therefore a need for:
- more and better metadata analysis on EMMs to take stock of existing research and to identify blank spots that require more investigation; and
- post-harmonization efforts, which are feasible and would be beneficial for some of these surveys as they cover similar EMM groups and overlap in the survey items included.
In an era when ‘big data’ is so much in fashion, the time seems ripe to pool resources and efforts to systematically compile, archive, disseminate and analyze ‘smaller data’ that can considerably improve our current knowledge of EMMs’ incorporation to public life in a cost-effective way.
Objectives
ETHMIGSURVEYDATA will improve access, usability and dissemination of survey data on the economic, social and political integration of ethnic and migrant minorities (EMMs) by meeting both research and capacity building objectives.
Research:
1:
Compile, document, archive and pool survey data on EMMs’ integration from various comparable studies conducted around Europe.
2:
Define best practices and standards for data assessments on EMMs’ integration.
3:
Design and launch an online platform or Data Hub, where users can access, learn from, and share survey data on EMMs’ integration.
Capacity Building:
1:
Promote comparative EMM survey data production in European countries.
2:
Train young European researchers on assessing and analyzing data on EMM integration.
3:
Disseminate best practices and standards for data assessments on EMMs’ integration to relevant stakeholders.
4:
Facilitate knowledge sharing among scholars and research-oriented organizations working on EMM integration in Europe
Organizational Structure
ETHMIGSURVEYDATA is directed by Professor Laura Morales (Chair) of the Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics, Sciences Po, Paris and collaboratively coordinated by a Management Committee (MC), Core Group, and the Grant Holder (GH) Institution. The COST Action 16111 is represented by Dr. Rossella Magli (Science Officer) and Ms. Svetlana Voinova (Administrative Officer) within the COST Association. Five Work Groups (WGs) have also been established to execute and support the research and capacity building activities of this COST Action.
Cost Rules
COST Actions are interconnected, interdisciplinary and collaborative research networks. They are organised by a range of networking tools, such as meetings, conferences, workshops, short-term scientific missions, training schools, publications and dissemination activities. COST Action funding can only be used to cover the costs of networking tools.
