Dear VDTR Members

As 2025 draws to a close, we would like to thank you for your commitment to the VDTR!

One focus of this year's activity was the external evaluation by a panel of experts as part of the Faculty of Catholic Theology's evaluation process. We would particularly like to thank our PhD representatives — Mirijam Salfinger, Verena Bartels and Muhammad Bilal — as well as the group of PhD candidates that took part in the evaluation. Their insights were invaluable and will help shape our future work.

Thanks to the support of several VDTR members, we also organized a series of successful early-career events at the European Academy of Religion conference in Vienna in July.

Finally, the publication of our audio guide, Vienna's Religious Tapestry, brought VDTR research to a wider audience and was met with critical acclaim. We look forward to the projects 2026 will bring, and we wish you and your loved ones a healthy, happy and inspiring New Year!

Warm regards,

the VDTR team

New: Principles of Good Supervision

The University of Vienna has recently adopted Key Principles of Good Supervision in doctoral education. Supervisors play a vital, multifaceted role in shaping the doctoral experience. Effective supervision means revisiting goals, celebrating milestones, and offering practical insights into both academic and non-academic career paths, while inspiring a passion for research and a sense of purpose. These Key Principles complement—rather than replace—the formal Code of Good Practice for Doctoral Schools and reflect a shared commitment to high-quality supervision.
