DoSChem Newsletter

Dear DoSChem Faculty, Students, Friends, and Alumni,

we would like to acknowledge and share with you the DoSChem highlights from the first half of 2022.

1. New at DoSchem

We are pleased to welcome new DoSChem students, PI and staff!

This spring we have admitted 13 new students and wish them a successful start at DoSChem!

We are also happy to greet Prof. Markus Mitterhauser (panel C) who recently has jointed our school as a new supervisor. DoSChem now has 53 DoSChem supervisors! We were also able to hire Dr. Mirjam Andrea Beck who has joined the management team of DoSChem in May 2022.

Welcome on board!

 2. New Ideas Awardees

DoSChem sponsors a joint project of Ludovica Martina Epasto (Institute of Biological Chemistry, Kurzbach group) and Miran Lemmerer (Institute of Organic Chemistry, Maulide group) with 26.000 Euro, who have both applied for our program “New Ideas” (1.01.2022) with the proposal: “Investigation of Amide Radical Intermediates by Integrative Real-Time Spectroscopy”.

Next application deadline for our “New Ideas” program is October 1st 2022.

3. International Exchange Awardees

We are happy to announce that DoSChem will support 2 proposals within the "International Exchange” program (01.04.22):

  • Iakovos Saridakis - “Halogen-atom transfer-enabled metal catalysis” (Institute of Organic Chemistry, Maulide group) will be studied at the RWTH Aachen University, Germany (group of Daniele Leonori).
  • Claudia Iriarte Mesa - “Towards enhanced oral delivery of insulin using mesoporous silica nanoparticles: interaction with gut microbiome and in vivo testing” (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry - functional materials, Kleitz group). This part of Claudia’s PhD work will be carried out at the University of California, Davis, USA (group of Allison Ehrlich’s lab at the Department of Environmental Toxicology).

  • In order to provide a platform for exchange of experience among students, we work on generating a DoSChem awardee/grantee database by listing all students who successfully applied to our programs and went abroad.

4. Long Night of Research 2022

Evelyn Fueloep, Florian Traxler, Christina Schedl,  and Alexander Karbalaei (Institute of Organic Chemistry, Brecker group) represented DoSChem at the Austria-wide Long Night of Research 2022, which took place on 20.05.2022 from 5 p.m. -11 p.m. Together with other Vienna Doctoral Schools, they explained their research “Drug Synthesis & Nature: Why does Chemistry need "natural" inspiration?” in a comprehensive hands-on way.

With the support of their team and in collaboration with the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research, they followed up on so-called “chemical fingerprint” of plants and showed how to isolate and purify natural substances and pigments with simple chromatographic experiments.

5. DoSChem International Call and Recruitment

DoSChem launched its second international call for doctoral students on March 4th till April 25th 2022 and offered 16 exciting PhD projects starting between summer and fall 2022.

For the first time the call was advertised on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn) as well.

To sum up, we received about 130 applications from 32 countries and plan to finish our recruiting by the end of June.

6. DoSChem Retreats

We are excited to inform you about our second round of DoSChem retreats taking place between May and June 2022:

  • Focus Area of Research A: 31.05.-02.06.22, Bad Waltersdorf (Styria)
  • Focus Area of Research B: 13.-15.06.22, Linz (Upper Austria)

Panel C has already completed their retreat in Frankenfels (Lower Austria) between 12.-14.05.22; an article summarizing the event and pictures will be published on our website soon.

8. Outlook

  • Our Second Student Symposium: will take place on 19th -20th of September 2022 at the lecture hall C1“Hörsaalzentrum lecture hall center” on campus. Confirmed speaker: Ferdi Schüth (panel A) and Jonathan Clayden (panel C). If anyone wants to help, we would greatly appreciate it. In that case contact the student representatives: students.dos.chem@univie.ac.at
  • Alumni: we are currently establishing the DoSChem Alumni/ae Program to stay connected with former students and faculty members. If you are still in contact with former colleagues and employees from the Vienna Doctoral School of Chemistry, please ask them to get in touch with us, so we can grow our pool of DoSChem Alumni/aes.
  • Check out the new iLAB website and their training programmes for this summer: the Digital iLAB is a new program of the University of Vienna coordinated by the Research Network Data Science and the DLE Research Services and Career Development. The goal of the program is to provide the basis for early stage ventures to secure further funding or to participate in incubation programs.
