Liebe Kolleginnen, liebe Kollegen,

2021 neigt sich dem Ende zu und ich darf als Dekan mit Stolz auf ein äußerst produktives und erfolgreiches Jahr zurückblicken:

Wir haben im Oktober mit dem UBB ein innovatives und markantes Laborgebäude bezogen, das höchste Standards setzt – sowohl im Bezug auf neue Arbeitsweisen – so wurden zahlreiche Kommunikationsräume geschaffen, um die Vernetzung und den Austausch zu fördern, als auch im Hinblick auf Nachhaltigkeit (silbernes klimaaktiv-Zertifikat).

Dass der Umzug so reibungslos über die Bühne gegangen ist, ist vor allem einer ausgezeichneten Vorbereitung durch die Umzugskoordinator*innen zu verdanken, die mehr als 2 Jahre in die Planung und Abwicklung investiert haben. Viel Engagement ist auch in unsere SySt Arbeitsgruppen geflossen, deren Ergebnisse im Markt der Möglichkeiten am 24. September präsentiert wurden. Ein Teil der Vorschläge wurde sogar bereits umgesetzt, für einen weiteren Teil bedarf es noch strategische Abstimmungen mit dem Rektorat bzw. mit den Führungskräften an den Departments. Des weiteren wurde die Reorganisation der vier Pharmaziedepartments in ein Department für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften vollzogen, wodurch wir positive Synergien erwarten.

Nicht zuletzt ist unsere Fakultät 2021 stark gewachsen: wir konnten die Professoren Daniel KÖNIG im Bereich Sports Nutrition und Tom HIGHAM für die Archaeological Sciences berufen. Des weiteren starteten heuer 8 Tenure Track Professor*innen: Sophie KHOM-STEINKELLNER, Pharmaceutical Bioanalysis; Julien ORTS, Drug Discovery by advanced NMR; Tim WOLLESEN, Evolutionary Morphology; Martin KUHLWILM, WWTF Anthropology, Katerina DOUKA, Archeological Sciences; Steffen WALDHERR, Computational methods for systems biology and biotechnology; Marietta ZILLE, Functional Pharmacology und Ulrich LÄCHELT, Preclinical Medicines Development.

Die Neuberufenen werden am 6. Dezember ihre Forschung in einer online Konferenz vorstellen.

Georg Hoffmann und Franz Essl unter den "Highly Cited Researchers"

Elf Forscher*innen der Universität Wien sind unter den diesjährigen Web of Science "Highly Cited Researchers"; zwei davon aus unserer Fakultät.

Georg Hoffmann vom Department für Ernährungswissenschaften und Franz Essl vom Department für Botanik und Biodiversitätsforschung sind unter den 1% der am meisten zitierten Forschenden in ihrem jeweiligen Feld. Die Liste der "Highly Cited Researchers 2021" wurde am 16. November durch die Web of Science Group, ein Unternehmen des Datenkonzerns Clarivate Analytics, veröffentlicht. Für die Analyse wurden wissenschaftliche Arbeiten herangezogen, die zwischen 2010 und 2020 publiziert und zitiert wurden

Wir freuen uns, dass die Forschung von Georg Hoffmann, Franz Essl und ihrer Teams international große Beachtung findet!

Unsere Fakultät wächst stetig. Am 06. Dezember freuen wir uns deshalb, die neuen Professor*innen, die ihre Position 2021 angetreten haben, der Fakultät und der Öffentlichkeit vorzustellen. In einer Online-Konferenz werden die Professor*innen in einen interessanten und interaktiven Dialog miteinander treten (Einladung folgt).

Warming Stripes for Vienna from 1775-2020 / Ed Hawkins (University of Reading)

BILD DES MONATS: #ShowYourStripes

Um die dramatische Erderwärmung der letzten Jahre einfach und deutlich aufzuzeigen, hat die Universität Redding weltweit Klimadaten gesammelt und in Erwärmungsprofilen dargestellt. Auf der Website https://showyourstripes.info können diese Daten für fast jede Region der Erde abgerufen und geteilt werden.

Das Bild des Monats zeigt die durchschnittlichen Jahrestemperaturen in Wien von 1775 bis 2020. Zusammen mit Stockholm ist es übrigens der einzige Datensatz, der bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückgeht.

Nachhaltigkeit ist auch an der Universität Wien ein großes Thema. Deshalb lädt die Koordinierungsgruppe Nachhaltigkeit am 02. Dezember zu einem online Townhall Meeting ein, bei dem Ideen ausgetauscht werden können, wie man die Universität nachhaltiger gestalten kann (mehr Infos unter Events).

Dear Colleagues,

2021 is coming to an end and I, as the dean, can look back to an exceptionally productive and successful year.

In October we completed the move into our brand-new and innovative Biology Building (UBB), which sets standards, not only in terms of new modes of working and creating spaces for communication and exchange, but also in terms of sustainability. With an innovative heat recovery system, and other features, we achieved the "klimaaktiv"-certificate in silver.

The enormous task of moving multiple departments and facilities was executed without major problems. This was mostly thanks to the excellent work of the moving coordinators who spent more than two years meticulously planning the move. A lot of engagement also went into our SySt working groups whose results were presented at the market of opportunities on September 24^th. Some of the presented suggestions have already been implemented, for the rest further strategic coordination with the rectorate and the department executives is required. Additionally, a reorganization of the four Pharmacy departments into one Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was carried out.

Last but not least our Faculty has grown considerably over he last year. We were able to appoint the professors Daniel KÖNIG in the field of Sports Nutrition and Tom HIGHAM in the field of Archaeological Sciences. The newly appointed Professors and their research will be presented to the Faculty on the 6^th of December in an online conference. In the name of the Dean’s team I give a warm welcome to all of them and thank them for their commitment to developing and growing the Faculty of Life Sciences.

Georg Hoffmann und Franz Essl amongst the most cited researchers worldwide

Eleven researchers from the University of Vienna are amongst the world's most "highly cited researchers". Two of those are members of our Faculty.

Georg Hoffmann from the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Franz Essl from the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research are amongst the 1% of the most cites researchers of their respective fields. The ranking "highly cited researchers 2021" was published on November 16^th by the Web of Science Group, a part of the data company Clarivate Analytics. For the analysis, all scientific publications between 2010 and 2020 were surveyed.

We congratulate the researchers and their teams for such an outstanding achievement!

Our Faculty keeps growing. Therefore we are looking forward to present the ten newly appointed full and tenure track professors who started in 2021. On the 6th of December they will eter into an engaging and stimulating dialogue in form of an online conference (invitation will follow soon).

IMAGE OF THE MONTH: #ShowYourStripes

In order to demonstrate the dramatic rise in temperature of the last centuries, the University of Redding collected Climate data worldwide and depicts them in comprehensible warming profiles. On the website https://showyourstripes.info you can view these data and zoom into specific regions.

Our picture of the month shows the warming profile of Vienna from 1775 to 2020. This makes Vienna -together with Stockholm- the only dataset that reaches as far back as the 16th century.

Sustainability is also a huge topic at the University of Vienna. Therefore, the coordination group sustainability invites everyone to participate in an online townhall meeting on the 2nd of December to discuss ideas how the University can be more sustainable (more information in the "Events" section).
