Newsletter No. 12

Dear VDTR Members

We are excited to bring you this 12th edition of our newsletter to inform you of the events planned for the new semester - we are looking forward to presenting you with another exciting and varied programme consisting of workshops, lectures and of course our Open Research Day. You can find all information below as well as on our website.

In particular, we would like to draw your attention to three activities:

  • On 14 March 2024 we start with our workshop series "It’s done! Strategies, Practical Advice, and Support for Successfully Completing Your Doctoral Thesis"

If you are approaching the final stages of completing your doctoral thesis, but unsure how and when to take the necessary steps, then this workshop is for you! Together with the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies, we offer a brown bag workshop series which helps you navigating the process of completing and submitting your thesis.

  • On 10 April 2024 at 5 pm we have the honour of welcoming Kristina Stöckl to a VDTR Public Lecture. The professor of sociology and member of the VDTR scientific advisory board will speak about "The Christian Right in Europe: Content, Actors and Transnational Links". Prof. Stöckl has been researching Christian conservative groups in Europe and their links to Russia and the USA since 2016. Her book (together with Dmitry Uzlaner) The Moralist International. Russia in the Global Culture Wars (Fordham 2022) documents the emergence of a "Christian right" in the Orthodox context and analyses the movement's content and key players. With the war in Ukraine since 2022, the conflict around "traditional values against the liberal West" has intensified. What does the Russian militarisation of "culture wars" mean for civil society, politics and churches within the EU?
  • On 18 April 2024 at 5.30pm we kick off our new Spotlight-on-Research-Format: We would like to present your publications on the VDTR website in order to give the general public an idea of the variety of topics covered by our doctoral school. To kick off this format, we are happy to host a public book presentation of JJ Warrens new book "Where two or three are connected" as well as a panel discussion with him and exciting guests and we cordially invite you all to attend.

Warm regards

The VDTR Team

Stock) statt.

18 April 2024: Book presentation and panel discussion

To mark the launch of his new book, VDTR PhD candidate and United Methodist pastor Reverend J.J. Warren invites a range of people to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that a global pandemic presents for contemporary church life. While JJ explores questions of building community online, sharing his own experiences and those of his interviewees, the panel discussion with invited guests will focus on how church communities can be inclusive across the digital divide, inviting different perspectives - such as gender and disability - and denominations into the conversation. The event marks the launch of a new presentation format in which we seek to give the research of our doctoral students the spotlight it deserves.
Place: Dekanatssitzungssaal der Katholisch-theologischen Fakultät, Universitätsring 1, Stiege 8, 2.Stock.

6 May 2024: VDTR Open Research Day - Registration is open!

22-25 July 2024: Summerschool "Art as a form of expression of religions" at Schloss Seggau

...and last but not least:

Check out the exciting teaching programme of the DSPL 60 for the spring term 2024!

Follow us on Instagram

Thanks to our fabulous members we were able to launch the VDTR Instagram account and we invite you to follow us. We want to let people participate in the life of the VDTR and inform them about our activities. But most of all, we want people to get to know you! So we would like to ask you to answer a few short questions about your research at the University of Vienna (we do not necessarily need to show your face). The channel will mainly show English content, but of course there will also be German reels. Please send us an e-mail to contact.vdtr@univie.ac.at if you are interested in participating.

POSSIBILITY TO PUBLISH ON THE RAT-BLOG

If you would like to share insights on your current research or any topics that interest you, the RaT-Blog warmly welcomes your contributions. RaT offers a low-threshold publication opportunity in the area of the "third mission," which focuses on communicating research to the public and is an increasingly important academic skill alongside teaching and research. The RaT-Blog has an ISSN number, making it citable and a great opportunity for publication, especially for Praedocs. Additionally, the Blog has now a collaboration with DerStandard and some articles get published there as well.

Don't hesitate to email Marian Weingartshofer with any questions or if would like to suggest an article: marian.weingartshofer[at]univie.ac.at
