Newsletter No. 25

Dear VDTR Members

As you know, the Open Research Day, which takes place every semester, is coming up at the end of April. The programme will be finalised in the coming days and published on the VDTR website. We have an additional programme item this time, as the VDTR evaluation is just around the corner. Read more about this below or on our website. In May, you can look forward to a rich programme of different workshops. They are aimed at people at different stages of their dissertation - those who are about to finish their dissertation or those who are still in the middle of the research process and are concerned with good scientific practice, science communication or organising scientific conferences.

Finally, at the end of this newsletter, check out the many interesting workshops and conferences taking place in Vienna this spring and early summer! If you want to be part of interesting conversations with internationally renowned scholars without having to travel far, this could be your chance.
With warm spring greetings,

the VDTR team

28 April 2025, 9am - 5pm: VDTR Open Research Day

Thank you for registering for the upcoming Open Research Day. The programme will be availble to you shortly on our website.

Important Information: Due to the upcoming evaluation of the doctoral school by external evaluators, there will be a small change in the schedule: in the morning, there will not only be presentations, but also a time slot of 1. 5 hours in which the student representatives, Mirijam Salfinger and Muhammad Bilal, will discuss the draft evaluation report together with the doctoral students present. Supervisors in attendance are respectfully requested to leave the ORD early for lunch. For any questions concerning the evaluation write an email to contact.vdtr@univie.ac.at.

We are looking forward to seeing you!

UPCOMING VDTR EVENTS AND TRAININGS

We are pleased to offer PhD candidates the opportunity to gain practical insights into skills and strategies that will advance their academic careers. Please consider registering (and attending) one of the workshops from our current workshop programme!

May 2025: Completion Workshop Series
Completing a major project—especially one as significant as your dissertation—is no small feat. The finish line is in sight, yet the path may feel less straightforward than you had anticipated or hoped. At the same time, completing your dissertation comes with a sense of loss: the project that has been your constant companion for so long will soon be behind you, along with the structure and direction it provided. So, how do you navigate these challenges and prepare for what comes next?
If any of this resonates with you, you’re not alone. This workshop series on May 8, 15 and 22 offers a space to share your experiences, gain fresh perspectives, and receive practical advice. Find the detailed programme on our website

Registration via urise.

With, among others, Lynn Chiu, International Science Communication Manager

19 May 2025, 9.45am - 1pm: Workshop on how to organise a scientific conference

In July 2025, the annual conference of the European Academy of Religion (EuARe) will take place in Vienna. The conference is organized by the Research Centre Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society (RaT). A corresponding course will be offered alongside the conference, providing students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in organizing academic conferences.

The first session of the course on May 19 from 9.45am to 1pm will also be available as a standalone workshop for members of the VDTR and will provide a fundamental introduction to conference organization and the role of conferences as a platform for academic exchange. Learn more.

Place: Dekanatssitzungssaal KTF, Main Building (Staircase 8, 2nd floor)

Please register until April 27 via e-mail to contact.vdtr@univie.ac.at

26 May 2025, 1.15pm - 4.45pm: Good scientific practice (and how to apply it)
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming research in the humanities. In the face of this change, it is all the more important to know and apply the principles of good scientific practice in your doctoral thesis. This workshop introduces the basic principles of good scientific practice and helps participants to understand ethical, methodological and organisational standards in research. In addition, participants will learn what constitutes questionable research practices or even misconduct in research, how the University of Vienna deals with problems related to scientific integrity, and where to turn for help with these issues.

With: AI Coordinator Dr. Laura Gandelgruper and Claudia Stermsek, coordinator of the Ombuds Office for Ensuring Compliance with Good Academic Practice

Place: Seminarraum 2 (Erdgeschoss), Schenkenstrasse 8-10, 1010 Wien
